ALLSTON
Allston is a neighborhood of Boston. Elevation is 20 feet.

The community is traditionally more affordable than other areas in the city and, as such, is home to many college students and recent immigrants.

Former and merged names include:
· Brighton
· Cambridge
· Little Cambridge

Along with Brighton, Allston was a part of Cambridge until the early 19th century. It was known as Little Cambridge.

Prior to the American Revolution, Little Cambridge was a small agricultural community.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the town of Cambridge proved incapable of providing the basic infrastructure for Little Cambridge's thriving cattle industry. As such, Allston and Brighton seceded from Cambridge and become the town of Brighton.

In 1874, after experiencing a good deal of growth and prodded by leaders who desired even more, the town of Brighton was annexed by Boston.

The turn of the 20th century was a period of tremendous growth in the community. Electric street cars, initiated in 1889, helped spur the growth.

Allston's proximity to downtown Boston and it's many colleges and universities make it a desirable area to live.

BRIGHTON
Brighton is a traditionally working-class urban neighborhood of the city of Boston, Massachusetts. It is often referred to, along with the neighboring neighborhood of Allston, as "Allston/Brighton". The two are almost entirely geographically isolated from the rest of Boston by the town of Brookline. Allston was also historically a subsection of the independent town of Brighton, before it was annexed by Boston in 1873. Since annexation, however, the two areas have established somewhat distinct identities.

Brighton is home to St. Elizabeth's Medical Center, and part of the campus of Boston College is located within its borders. The university recently purchased the 43-acre campus that formerly housed the chancery of the Archdiocese of Boston, located at the corner of Lake Street and Commonwealth Avenue. That campus still houses St. John's Seminary.

The economic centers of the neighborhood include Brighton Center, Oak Square, and Cleveland Circle.

The neighborhood, which is primarily populated by undergraduate and graduate students, young professionals working class families, and townies. Brighton consists of an intricate network of streets lined with multi-family houses, three deckers, and apartment buildings. Local family businesses mix with national chains of pharmacies and banks along Brighton's main street, Washington Street, which runs straight through Brighton Center to Oak Square.

Brighton appears on a map as a western appendage of Boston, connected to the rest of the city by the Allston neighborhood and otherwise surrounded on all sides by the cities of Cambridge, Watertown, and Newton, and the town of Brookline. Allston-Brighton is often considered collectively as one neighborhood.

The Charles River separates Brighton from Cambridge and Watertown.

Major streets in Brighton include Commonwealth Avenue, Washington Street and Market Street. The B line of the Boston MBTA subway Green Line runs directly through the neighborhood along Commonwealth Avenue, and the C line of the Green Line ends at Cleveland Circle after passing through Brookline.
